What is Emissivity – Infrared

If you deal with infrared, you’ll often come across the term Emissivity, but what exactly does it mean?

The emissivity ε (energy radiation factor) is the ratio between the radiation intensity of a body and that of a blackbody at the same temperature.

This is the most important coefficient when measuring a certain material precisely. If you need to measure the temperature of a surface with an infrared thermometer, then you need to know the emissivity of the material and adjust the instrument accordingly.

The tables below list the emissivity levels for metals and non-metals. The values given are approximate and may vary according to the surface and condition of the material.
